Five ECACHL Women Earn All-America Honors
ALBANY, N.Y. - Five ECAC Hockey League Women were named to RBK All-America teams, it was announced today by the American Hockey Coaches Association. Frozen Four participant Annie Guay from St. Lawrence and Patty Kazmaier Award Finalist Julie Chu from Harvard were both first-team picks. Dartmouth's Gillian Apps, SLU's Sabrina Harbec and Harvard's Sarah Vaillancourt were all named to the second team.
Guay was a second team pick last season, while Chu earned second-team honors in both 2003 and 2005. The two were named to the ECACHL's All-League First-Team two weeks ago.
Guay is an important key to the Saints' defensive success this season, as the team held league opponents to 1.86 goals per game. Overall, Guay and her teammates have allowed 2.10 goals per game in 39 contests. The junior has also provided some offense for SLU this season, scoring 21 points (five goals, 16 assists) in league games, which ties Cahow for the lead among all ECACHL blue liners. Overall, she has 11 goals and 22 assists on the year, which also leads the league's defenders and is ranked seventh nationally among blue liners. She is the career points leader for Saint defensemen with 72, and also holds the career record for goals by a defenseman with 21, the season record for goals by a defenseman with 11 this season and the career record for assists by a defenseman with 52. Guay's Saints are playing in the Women's Frozen Four this weekend in Lake Placid, N.Y. St. Lawrence is the host institution for this year's women's national championship.
Chu, who missed last season as she was a member of the U.S. Olympic Team, was the league's leading scorer with 53 points in conference games. She scored 16 goals and a recorded a league-best 37 assists in 20 league games. Overall, Chu leads the nation in points per game, after averaging 2.20 per outing, which came from her 18 goals and 48 assists (66 total points). Chu is Harvard's career assists leader (196) and ranks third in school history in career points (284). A Patty Kazmaier Award finalist, Chu is a seven-year member of the U.S. National Team.
Of the 12 athletes named, only two players hail from the United States, while the other 10 are from Canada.
