Bulldogs Fall to RPI Despite 47 Saves from Ladiges
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale finished its first weekend of ECAC
Hockey play at Ingalls Rink with a split, falling to RPI on
Saturday after topping Union 3-2 in overtime Friday night. The
Bulldogs were outshot 52-15 by the Engineers, who got a hat trick
from forward Eleeza Cox. Senior goalie Genny Ladiges made 47 saves
for Yale, the second time in the last four games she has made at
least 40 saves.
RPI outshot Yale 20-7 in the first period but only scored once, a
power-play tally by Cox at 17:53. That left Yale in a similar
situation to the previous night, when the Bulldogs were outshot
14-1 by Union in the first frame but surrendered only one goal, on
a power play. The Bulldogs then outshot the Dutchwomen 23-17 the
rest of the way, coming back from deficits twice before winning it
in overtime on a goal by sophomore forward Jackie Raines.
That same formula did not work on Saturday, though, as RPI kept up
its offensive onslaught in the second period. The Engineers outshot
Yale 14-3 in the second and extended their lead to 3-0 on goals by
forwards Jill Vandergrift and Jordan Smelker.
Cox scored on a penalty shot at 3:01 of the third, then got RPI's
fifth goal when she scored on the power play again at 6:14.
Engineers goalie Brianna Piper finished with 15 saves for the
shutout.
Yale was hurt by seven penalties in the game, the seventh time in
nine games that the Bulldogs have had at least six penalties. Yale
also remained without four defensemen, all injured.
The Bulldogs travel to Mercyhurst next weekend.
