Bobcats Down Raiders on Road
HAMILTON, N.Y. –The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team
used three first period goals to power past ECAC Hockey opponent
Colgate, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink in Hamilton, N.Y.
Junior defender Regan Boulton (Brandon, Manitoba) led the charge
with two goals, while freshman forward Morgan Fritz-Ward (Mason
City, Iowa) netted her first-career goal for the Bobcats, who
improved to 10-4-2 in ECAC Hockey and 14-9-2 overall. The Raiders
fall to 3-8-1 in ECAC Hockey action and 8-14-1 overall.
Quinnipiac jumped out to the 1-0 lead at the 8:52 mark into the
first period of play, capitalizing on its first power-play of the
afternoon. On the ensuing face-off following a Colgate checking
penalty, sophomore forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario)
flipped the puck to fellow sophomore forward Erica Uden Johansson
(Sundsvall, Sweden) who quickly dished the puck up top to Boulton.
Boulton took a look at the net, collected her composure, and sniped
her fifth goal of the season over the shoulder of senior goaltender
Kimberly Sass. Uden Johansson was awarded with her third on the
year, while Babstock picked up her team-leading 16th assist of the
season on the goal.
The Bobcats continued to attack the net following the goal, and
added a second score at the 15:03 mark into the first frame, as
Uden Johansson knocked home her fourth goal of the season. Freshman
forward Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) skated into the
offensive zone with good pace and found Uden Johansson in the slot,
where the sophomore controlled the puck with her skate before
firing off the shot. Kosta earned her 14th assist of the season on
the score.
Quinnipiac added its third goal of the period just under two
minutes later at the 16:52 mark on Fritz-Ward's first-career tally,
sending the Bobcats into the locker room with a comfortable 3-0
lead. The goal developed quickly, as senior captain Jordan Elkins'
(Wasilla, Alaska) shot from the top of the face-off circle was
initially deflected by a Colgate defender. The puck took a sideways
trajectory away from the goal, but Fritz-Ward left her feet and
fully extended her body, took a successful swipe at the puck while
falling to the ice, and beat Sass for the score. Elkins was
credited with her second assist of the season, while sophomore
forward Amanda Colin (Burnsville, Minn.) earned her fifth helper of
the year.
The goal would be Sass' last conceded tally of the game, as she was
replaced in the second period by freshman goaltender Susan Allen.
Sass made five saves in her outing, while Allen turned away 13
shots for Colgate. Freshman goaltender Chelsea Laden (Lakeville,
Minn.) had another fine outing in net for the Bobcats, making a
game-high 32 saves (matching her career-high) for her third victory
of the season.
Colgate netted its first score at the 8:58 mark into the second
period on junior forward Brittany Phillips' power-play goal. Junior
forward Jenna Klynstra found Phillips in a tight window on the
crease, who beat Laden to make the score 3-1. Sophomore forward
Taylor Volpe was also credited with an assist on the score, earning
her fifth helper of the season.
Boulton added her second goal of the game on a rocket of a shot
from the top of the face-off circle to increase Quinnipiac's lead
to 4-1 at the 4:15 mark into the third period of play. Due to each
team's penalty (separated by 37 seconds) Boulton found herself with
open ice during the four-on-four opportunity and skated in
unmarked. Her slap-shot once again overpowered Colgate's goalie,
this time beating Allen for her sixth goal of the season. Kosta was
credited with her second assist of the game on the score.
The Bobcats played strong defensively through the remainder of the
game, holding Colgate scoreless despite the Raiders aggressive play
up front. Colgate pulled Allen with 2:26 remaining in the contest,
however Laden refused to allow another shot through.
Overall, Quinnipiac was whistled for five penalties in the contest,
while Colgate was called for six infractions. The Bobcats went
1-for-5 on its extra skater opportunities and the Raiders were
1-for-4 on its chances.
