Fry Nets Four for Crimson in Win Over Yale
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore forward Lyndsey Fry played
the role of finisher on the day, as her four goals powered the No.
8 Harvard women's hockey team to a 4-0 blanking of Yale (1-27-1,
1-20-1 ECAC), Saturday at Bright Hockey Center in the
regular-season finale. The win gives Harvard (20-8-1, 17-4-1 ECAC)
its 10th 20-win season in program history and first since 2009-10.
Fry's hat trick is the third by a Harvard skater this season as
Gina McDonald and Jillian Dempsey also tallied three goals in a
game this year. Fry and Dempsey's feats were both natural hat
tricks, and both recorded a short-handed, an even strength and a
power-play goal.
Goalie Laura Bellamy recorded her seventh shutout of the season and
14th of her career, turning aside 17 shots in the game. Her seven
clean sheets on the season puts her in a tie for second in program
history, as Ali Boe '06 turned in seven shutouts in 2003-04. Her 14
career shutouts put her along in third place in team annals.
Harvard got its first score of the day on its first power play of
the game, jumping out to a 1-0 lead at the 8:01 mark. Josephine
Pucci wound up for a shot from the point and a deft tip by Lyndsey
Fry redirected the puck past Genny Ladiges for Fry's 16th tally of
the year. Fry struck again with 6:53 to play in the first period,
as a Samantha Reber eked past Ladiges and Fry was there to clean up
the rebound. Harvard closed the first period with a daunting 22-6
edge in shots.
Penalties were the story of the second period as Harvard was
whistled for five infractions, but stood strong on the penalty
kill, keeping the Bulldogs off the board. In fact, Fry saw an
opportunity when Harvard was called for its second penalty of the
period, capitalizing on a Yale turnover to complete her natural hat
trick. Jillian Dempsey and Marissa Gedman combined to strip the
puck from Yale and Fry took care of the rest, beating Ladiges on a
one-on-one at 7:59 for the short-handed score.
Some more fancy stick work earned Fry her fourth tally of the game.
Michelle Picard fielded a pass from Samantha Reber, and Picard led
Fry with a pass into the Yale zone. Fry dragged the puck across her
body and lifted a backhand shot past Ladiges to cap the scoring on
the day, registering her 19th goal of the season.
Following the game, Harvard paid tribute to its lone member of the
class of 2012, captain Alisa Baumgartner. The West Vancover, B.C.,
native heads into the ECAC tournament with 16 career points on six
goals and 10 assists.
With the regular season wrapped up, the Crimson now turns its
attention to the ECAC tournament. Harvard, the No. 2 seed in the
tournament, will host Princeton in a best-of-three series,
beginning with a 4 p.m. game Friday at Bright Hockey Center.
