CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. — ECAC Hockey has announced its men’s weekly award winners, honoring Alex Laferriere (Harvard), Henry Thrun (Harvard), Connor Murphy (Union), and Cal Mell (Union) for the week of play ending October 30, 2022.
Forward of the Week
Alex Laferriere (Jr., Harvard) opened the Crimson’s 2022-23 campaign in a big way, tallying four points to put the team in the win column in their very first game of the season. In Friday’s 5-2 win over Dartmouth, Laferriere opened the scoring for Harvard with an even-strength goal in the second period that kick-started the team’s offense. He added an assist on teammate Jack Bar’s short-handed goal less than five minutes later, then scored the unassisted game-winner early in the third. Laferriere also registered the primary assist on Matthew Coronato’s powerplay insurance goal.
Defender of the Week
Henry Thrun (Sr., Harvard) added three assists from the blue line in Harvard’s opening weekend, contributing to the team’s 2-0 start to the season. On Friday, Thrun registered an assist on teammate Alex Laferriere’s opening goal and added a second assist on Zakary Karpa’s insurance goal in the third period. Thrun’s assist on Matthew Coronato’s goal in the third period of Saturday’s contest against Princeton helped the Crimson to a 4-2 win.
MAC Goaltending Goaltender of the Week
Connor Murphy (Sr., Union) made 53 saves en route to a weekend split against Rensselaer. On Friday, he made 30 saves on 32 shots and was the last line of defense during three successful penalty kills. He earned his first shutout of the season in Saturday’s 6-0 defeat of the Engineers, making 23 saves and defending against six Rensselaer power plays.
Rookie of the Week
Cal Mell (Fr., Union) tallied three assists from the blue line in the Dutchmen’s 6-0 win over Rensselaer on Saturday, setting a single-game high. All three of Mell’s points came on the power play, where he helped the team convert on 75% of their opportunities and powered the team to a weekend split with the Engineers.
