Brown Captures 5-2 Win Over Alaska Anchorage

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (2-5-0, 1-3-0 ECAC) tallied three goals in the final period en route to a 5-2 home win over the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves Wednesday night at Meehan Auditorium.

"It was a good response in the first period; we didn't start off the game very strongly," the Class of 1975 Head Coach for Men's Hockey Brendan Whittet '94 said. "We were on our heels, and we weren't very aggressive. Halyk gave us an opportunity to get our legs under us. The guys played better as the period progressed, and we played better as the game went on.

"I thought we were able to play a little harder, a little heavier, and make decisions a little quicker in the second and third periods. It wasn't a perfect game by any stretch, but we found a way to string some pretty good shifts together and swing the momentum."

The Seawolves took a 1-0 lead 15:24 into the first period off a breakaway chance for Tanyon Bajzer. Brown goaltender Fred Halyk (35 saves) made the initial save on Bajzer, but Ty Spencer was alone to tally the rebound goal for his third of the season.

Matt Desiderio tied the game with his first career goal two minutes later. Desiderio collected a pass from Charlie Gollob at the top of the offensive zone and wired a quick shot to beat Anchorage goaltender Tyler Krivtsov (28 saves). Ivan Zadvernyuk added the secondary assist on the goal.

Gollob gave Brown a 2-1 lead three minutes into the second period with his second goal of the season. Zadvernyuk won the offensive zone draw back to Gollob for the quick strike goal.

Desiderio nearly had his second of the game late in the middle period, but his shot hit the post.

Halyk made a great save on Ethan Warrener on a Brown power play to preserve the one-goal lead with just over a minute to play in the second.

Ben Poitras doubled Brown's lead 59 seconds into the third period with a shot from just outside the blue line that snuck through Krivtsov. Brian Nicholas and Mike Cataldo picked up the assists on the goal.

Dylan Contreras tallied his first goal of the season 7:57 into the period on the power play to bring the Seawolves back within a goal. Logan Acheson and Oren Shtrom picked up the assists on the goal.

Ashton Bynum struck for his first career goal 11:13 into the final period off assists from Ben Poitras and Owen Dyer. Bynum collected a pass from Poitras at the top of the circle and beat Krivtsov with a wrist shot for the two-goal lead.

Gollob found the empty net with an unassisted goal for the night's final tally with 23 seconds remaining in the third.
