Quinnipiac’s Elliott Groenewold Marked as Howie’s Best Defensive Defenseman

DANBURY, CONN. — ECAC Hockey is proud to announce Quinnipiac’s Elliott Groenewold as the recipient of the Howie’s Best Defensive Defenseman for the 2025-26 season, as announced on Thursday night at the awards ceremony in Lake Placid, New York.

The Bobcats' sophomore defender had a huge year, ending the regular season with six goals and 13 assists. He ended the season as Quinnipiac’s top-scoring defenseman, with half of his goals being game winners. In front of the net, he ended the season tied for ninth in the ECAC with 44 blocked shots.

Groenewold leads the nation in overall plus-minus at a +38, the second-highest of any NCAA skater since at least 2002-03. He earned All-ECAC First Team honors, alongside teammate Ethan Wyttenbach.
