SUNRISE, Fla. - The Florida Panthers triumphed over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals last night making General Manager Bill Zito (Yale '87) a Stanley Cup Champion. Zito becomes just the sixth General Manager in history to build both a Calder Cup and a Stanley Cup champion in the same career as GM.
Along with Zito, there are five other Florida executives with ties to the ECAC, making this the fifth-consecutive season that multiple ECAC Hockey alums have played roles in a Stanley Cup title.
Paul Krepelka, Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations, played two seasons at Princeton and has now been with Florida for four seasons.
Cornell men's hockey alum Braden Birch now works in the role of Director of Hockey Operations & Salary Cap Management for the Panthers. Former Yale Bulldog Sean Backman also serves as a Pro Scout for the Panthers.
Additionally, Florida's Chief Operating Officer Bryce Hollweg and Executive Vice President of People & Facilities Rob Stevenson earned degress from Cornell and Yale, respectively.
Last season, a trio of ECAC Hockey alumni became Stanley Cup Champions as members of the Vegas Golden Knights front office. Cornell's Darren Eliot, Quinnipiac's Connor Jones, and Dartmouth's Dustin Walsh all reached the mountaintop with the Golden Knights' 9-3 victory over Florida in Vegas.
