Men's Ice Hockey 2/23/2024 12:00:00 PM Gabriel Seger Named 2024 ECAC Hockey Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year Becomes Fifth Winner in Program History CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – ECAC Hockey announces Cornell's Gabriel Seger as the recipient of the 2024 Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, recognizing his outstanding achievements both on and off the ice. The award, presented annually, is given to an ECAC Hockey male athlete who exemplifies excellence and leadership in the realms of academics, athletics, and community engagement. A senior forward at Cornell, Seger is the fifth player for the Big Red to be named as ECAC Hockey's top scholar-athlete, joining Colin Greening (2010), Keir Ross (2012), Andy Iles (2014), and Kyle Betts (2021). Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in electrical and computer engineering within Cornell's College of Engineering, Seger boasts an impressive academic record, earning three A+ grades and maintaining a commendable 3.58 cumulative GPA. David Delchamps, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Cornell, commends Seger's remarkable academic performance, highlighting the challenges of excelling in a top-five undergraduate ECE program while shouldering the substantial time commitment demanded by varsity hockey. Seger also fulfills his responsibilities as an alternate team captain with admirable leadership. On the ice, Seger has made substantial contributions to the Big Red during his two-year tenure, establishing himself as a formidable force and earning recognition as a respected leader. Leading the team in goals, assists, and total points with 11 goals and 19 assists this season, Seger's powerful frame and skill set him apart as one of the top players in both the conference and the nation. With an assist in last weekend's 3-0 shutout over Brown, he became the first Cornell player with consecutive 30-point seasons since Morgan Barron in 2018-20. The Uppsala, Sweden native is one of 14 active Division I skaters to amass over 100 career points. Beyond the rink, Seger has devoted considerable time to community service, embodying the spirit of the award. During a service mission to the Dominican Republic this past summer, Seger and his teammates collaborated to construct a community service center that distributed essential items such as clothing, shoes, and food to those in need. The team also provided computer and school supplies to local schools and engaged in community-building activities, including playing baseball with local children. Additionally, Seger has been actively involved with the Racker Center, offering strength-based support to individuals with disabilities and their families, and contributes as a volunteer in the Newfield Schools Mentor Program, aiding local elementary school students. Cornell head coach Mike Schafer lauds Seger as an exemplary scholar-athlete, stating, "Gabriel truly demonstrates all the qualities that one might find in an exemplary scholar-athlete and embodies the spirit of the award on a daily basis. He is an incredibly well-rounded individual—an excellent student in a challenging field, beloved by his teammates, relied upon as a key player on a top-20 program in college hockey, and involved in numerous community outreach projects."
