BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Union women's ice hockey team secured a 1-0 win over the University of Vermont in Burlington on Wednesday night at the Gutterson Fieldhouse.
First-year Karianne Engelbert scored the lone goal for the Garnet Chargers while sophomore goaltender Monja Wagner recorded her first career shutout.
Vermont came out strong, registering eight shots to the Garnet Chargers' six in the opening frame. Union still managed two prime two-on-one opportunities but could not capitalize on either, and despite their chances, the first period ended scoreless.
Union found their spark in the second period, outshooting Vermont 14 to nine. Both teams had golden opportunities midway through the frame, but Vermont's goaltender, Jane Gervais, and Union's Wagner each made key stops, keeping the score locked at zero as the period came to a close.
In the final frame, Vermont outshot the Garnet Chargers 11 to five, but Engelbert found a way to win it for the Garnet Chargers, scoring her 10th goal of the season with 2:20 to go in regulation. The shot was originally ruled no goal on the ice and play continued. However, the goal was reviewed at the next stoppage and replay showed the luck went off the crossbar into the net, and quickly back out.
Wagner played stellar in net for Union making 28 critical saves to keep the Garnet Chargers in the game and to pick up the 1-0 win.
Women's hockey is back in action on Tuesday, November 26, as they take on the Engineers of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in ECAC action. Puck drop is set for 11:00 AM.
