CLIFTON PARK, NY – ECAC Hockey has announced that former NBC Sports analyst Pierre McGuire will join the broadcast teams for the upcoming ECAC Hockey Women’s Championship Weekend in Hamilton, N.Y. and this month's ECAC Hockey Men's Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y.
McGuire will serve as color commentator for the semifinals and championship contests.
“The ECAC is taking an amazing stride towards broadcasting the grit, perseverance, and commitment these student athletes make every day,” said McGuire. “Hockey is more than just a game to these student athletes, it’s their passion. As the student-athletes go on to lace up their skates for the esteemed title of ECAC Champion, I am honored to share stories from their season, the fervor for the growth of the game, and relay the intensity of these games as only one team can win the coveted Title.”
McGuire, a current member of the Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee, most recently served as an analyst for NBC Sports’ hockey coverage at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. This marked the seventh Olympic assignment for McGuire, who made his Olympic debut during NBC’s coverage of the 2006 Torino Winter Games. McGuire has served as an “Inside-the-Glass” analyst for NBC Sports’ coverage of men’s and women’s hockey at the past four Winter Olympics and handled reporting duties in London (2012) and Rio (2016).
“We are excited to have Pierre join our Championship broadcast teams as we embark on what should be two weekends of tremendous competition,” said ECAC Hockey Commissioner Doug Christiansen. “Pierre’s experience calling Olympic Gold Medal games, Stanley Cup Finals, and other high-level events in our sport will allow him to showcase and highlight our elite student-athletes in a way that has not been done before. With four top-10 nationally ranked teams represented in our women's final four, we know the competition on the ice will be unmatched. Pierre helps us to achieve the same standard of excellence in media realm.”
McGuire previously served as NBC Sports’ NHL ‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst. In 2013, McGuire won the Sports Emmy for Outstanding Sports Personality – Sports Reporter. Previously, he was the game analyst for TSN Canada’s national NHL broadcasts. In addition to his work on TSN’s NHL coverage, McGuire provided analysis for TSN’s coverage of the IIHF World Junior Championship and NHL Entry Draft.
Prior to his radio and television career, McGuire had a long and successful coaching career, highlighted by his role as an assistant coach and scout with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he was part of the organization’s back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 1991 and 1992. McGuire also served as head coach of the Hartford Whalers, as well as a scout and assistant coach with the Ottawa Senators. His first coaching job was as an assistant at Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y. Over the next several years, McGuire coached at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., and St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.
All three games from each tournament will be broadcast live across the United States on ESPN+ and internationally via Stretch Internet.
