Kicking off the forward line is Princeton’s Kai Daniells. The junior was explosive on the ice this season, totaling 11 goals (T-5 in ECAC) and 13 assists for 24 points (T-6 in ECAC). This placed him first in goals and points and second in assists for Princeton. On November 21 against St. Lawrence, Daniells tied the program record of five goals scored, the most by an NCAA Division I player since 2011. It was also the most scored in a game by a Princeton player since 1962 and just the fourth time the mark was reached. The British Columbia native found himself in front of the net often, totaling 68 shots and netting four game-winners (T-1 in ECAC).
Down in Hamden, Mason Marcellus had a huge impact on the Bobcats’ season. Marcellus scored 5 goals and 14 assists, for 19 points in league play. Overall, the alternate captain has netted 8 goals and tallied 24 assists (T-3 in ECAC) for 32 points. The Lincoln Stars (USHL) alum came in clutch this season scoring the game winning goal against Dartmouth on January 3.
Completing our forward lineup is Ryan Bottrill of Clarkson. The senior scored six goals and 16 assists (T-3 in ECAC) for 22 points (9th in ECAC). Hailing from Arizona, Bottrill averaged one point per game on the year. Clarkson will face the top-seeded Bobcats in the best-of-three quarterfinal series.
Back at the blue line, Harvard’s Matthew Morden is the first of our defensive pairing. In his third year with the Crimson, Morden scored 3 goals (1 SHG) with 10 assists for 13 points. The Hamilton, Ontario native finished 3rd in points for the Crimson and ended with a +3 rating overall. He is one of only four defensemen in the ECAC to have four multi-point games since the start of the new year. He tallied 13 blocked shots and proved a critical piece of Harvard’s defensive end this season.
Across the blue line is CJ Foley of Dartmouth. The junior alternate captain netted 2 goals and 12 assists for 14 points, including the game-winner over Colgate at the beginning of the season. The Hanover, Massachusetts, averaged 0.64 points per game and posted 58 shots in the regular season. For the second time in a row, Foley was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award as announced on February 25. Dartmouth secured an opening round playoff bye and will host Union in the quarterfinals to punch their ticket to Lake Placid.
In net is Princeton’s Arthur Smith, a junior with an overall record of 8-8-2 (6-7-2 in ECAC) and 0.911 save percentage (4th in ECAC). After missing nine games due to injury, Smith returned to the crease on January 2, where he went 2-0 on the weekend against ranked opponents Dartmouth and Harvard. He made 58 saves on 64 shots to earn ECAC Goaltender of the Week honors on January 5. The Farmington, Connecticut native has a 2.42 goals against average (6th in the ECAC), totaling 369 saves in 15 games played. Smith has proven to be a critical factor in Princeton’s fourth-place conference finish.
